For most women, they start to have cravings in their first trimester, peaking during the second trimester, and then start to decline in the third. Midwives say very few cravings continue after labour.
The fact is nobody exactly knows why women crave food during pregnancy. People say it is due to the hormonal change while being pregnant. These hormonal changes have a powerful impact on taste and smell.
Cravings are individual as your pregnancy. One of the most common food cravings is for sweet foods like chocolate. Skipping meals tends to make your craving worst.
Here are some ways to help control your food cravings:-
- Find healthier options if you fancy something sweet like eating some fresh fruit
- Buy a single portion of the food you crave. Don’t buy a whole bag of chocolate; just buy one or two pieces.
- Distract yourself do something to take your mind off your craving like going for a walk
Some women crave things that aren’t food. This kind of cravings is known as pica. Eating non foods during pregnancy can be dangerous and a sign that you need to see a doctor, as this can cause problems for you and your baby.
Many women crave foods that you used to avoid, and go off things that you used to enjoy. This is known as food aversion. It’s not only the taste but also the smell of a food that causes the aversion. The most common food aversion is meat, the sight and smell of raw meat, cooking smells, and the texture of prepared meat can be too much to stomach.
